9 Benefits of alone time

phone rings

Mary: Hi, Lily have you replied to your emails?

Lily: I will do that ASAP

Lily’s mother screams from the sitting room

Mother: LILY!!!

Lily: Yes mummy

Mother: Please prepare my dinner

Lily: I’m on it, mummy.

Meanwhile, Lily still has to finish her project, get ready for work, and prepare for her presentation the next morning as well as put her siblings to sleep. She needs to get some rest but the environment is so noisy with all the partying and noise from outside.

Undoubtedly, life can be so overwhelming. Most times, we have lots of activities, chores, and work to be done. All these activities make us feel overloaded and overreact to the slightest provocation. Which can also make it difficult to catch up.

We can easily get caught up in the drama and cycles of life. We can get so engrossed with life’s activities that we forget to take care of ourselves.

Whether you are an introvert, extrovert, or both, a little alone time/ solitude can make you happier and make you feel sane. If we do not give ourselves time to recharge, we run the risk of burning out emotionally, mentally, and physically. Most times, this might mean stepping away from all the chaos and drama just to spend some time alone.

Benefits of Alone Time

1). It allows for sober reflection: Time alone can enable you to think about your life. You think about where you are and where you want to be. Self-reflection is important for human development, accessing progress, and learning. It helps you identify your uniqueness, learn about your deficiencies, and work towards fixing your flaws. Alone Time helps you work on your self physically, mentally, and spiritually.

2). Alone Time increases productivity: I noticed that when I spend time alone, I am more productive and it helps me get results faster. When you spend time alone, the voices and the noises fade away giving you time to focus on one thing. This way, you can concentrate and get more work done in a short time. If you are studying, you understand faster and if you are calculating, there will be less risk for errors.

3). Solitude makes you more creative: Lots of writers, artists, and some occupations that require a lot of creativity prefer working in a quiet place. Being alone gives your brain a chance to wander, which can help you become more creative. You get new ideas, think faster, and get very creative.

4). Being alone can help you build mental strength

5). Getting solutions: When you are distracted, it is very difficult to think of solutions to the problems or challenges we are faced with. But in silence, you can get a faster and more accurate solution to a situation presented.

6). Solitude helps you know yourself: Being alone will help you know yourself, what you can tolerate, your mental capacity, your strength, and your weaknesses. This way you can make decisions without worrying about external influences. Whereas when you are in a group, it is difficult to know who exactly you are. However, when you are alone you can push yourself to get a good result and be better.

7). Being alone allows you to think and plan your life, create goals, and set plans for your life.

8). Trusting Yourself Becomes Easier: When you spend time alone, you get to work on yourself. This helps you build your stamina and have confidence in yourself.

9). It helps you recharge: For example, when your phone or laptop is left on all the time, it might run the risk of crashing or not lasting long. Similarly, your brain in the midst of all the noise, might not be able to get the adequate amount of rest that is required for it to function to its full capacity. Solitude helps you to revitalize your mind and body which will make you feel refreshed, think clearly, and be more focused.

some things you can do in your alone time

Now it all comes down to being able to manage your stress and knowing your limit. When you get to that point, give yourself some break to revitalize.

  1. Be yourself
  2. Work on yourself
  3. Enjoy the time
  4. Practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing, yoga, meditation, massages, etc.
  5. Set achievable goals
  6. Go out of town
  7. Find a hobby😏
  8. Care for your physical and mental being
  9. Create a schedule/plan

Set out a few minutes in a day to be alone with your thoughts. Just 10-15 minutes can be a great benefit. Silence or turn off your gadgets and give yourself some time alone.

“In solitude is healing. Speak to your soul. Listen to your heart. Sometimes in the absence of noise we find the answers.” Dodinsky
