dealing with stress

Dealing with stress can be difficult but sometimes you have to chill. life can be tough, I remember at some point in my life I had a lot to deal with, I had no paying job but jeez!!! I had my day occupied and tight; I told my friend I wish God can add 2 hours to my day, she laughed and said: “I know it will still not be enough“. One thing about stress is you have to find a way around it. Well for me I usually just sit back, analyze my life, find the stressors and put things into perspective, try to see what works for me and re-strategize if needed.

The cause of stress is called a stress-or and it could vary from person to person covering a wide range of things. My stress  level could be your normal daily routine and vice versa.

Stress can be as a result of Work, family, adjustment, getting a promotion, relationship, studies, medicine, being fired from work, death of a loved one, divorce, planning an event the list can go on and on.

when stressed, the body tries to adjust by secreting hormones like cortisoalso known as “stress hormone” and Adrenaline which can alter the body’s normal function in several ways, they include

some ways stress can affect you

desperate, thinking, stressed out

Emotionally

  • Tiredness, lack of proper sleep
  • Loss of concentration
  • racing thought
  • Withdraw from others
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Anger
  • frustration

Medically

  • heart problems
  • increase blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Stomach ulcers and acid reflux
  • Due to an increase in cortisol level, the body’s immune system gets very weak and find it difficult to fight infection and recover from illness
  • Loss of sexual urges and low sperm production
  • Panic attacks
  • Depending on how your body responds there could be weight loss or weight gain.
  • Body pains and muscle cramps
  • Heart attack

Mentally

  • Poor judgment
  • Memory problems
  • restlessness
  • confusion

I’m sure you thought stress affects just you, right? But guess what it does not just affect you it can also spill to those around you, affect your relationship with your spouse or friends by making us withdraw from them even without us knowing about it, cloud our sense of judgment and also increase the other’s stress level. When we are stressed we release a chemical which when its inhaled by others, can make them anxious and stressed too; this is called “secondhand stress” this stress can be passed through signals like facial expressions, tone of your voice, and touch; now you have learned something new… haven’t you?

How to deal with stress

I know dealing with stress can be difficult and adjusting may be hard but the question is how do we cope with stress?

  • Identify the stress-or: If its something that needs to be avoided, try to avoid it and if it should be confronted, just confront it. Know your limit.
  • Eat healthily: I have noticed a lot of people like myself eat a lot of junks when they are stressed. Do you feel that way too?.
  • Exercise goes a long way
  • Also one thing I do is arrange my room, keep it clean, open up the curtains and window to let in fresh air and light in (bright light therapy very essential) and it gets rid of depression you should try it too.
listen, informal meeting, chatting
  • Talk to others: Most times it helps when we share our feelings with the right people. They will also get to share their own stories and experiences that way you know you are not alone.
  • If the stress is too much just take a time-off to relax.
  • Ensure you get an adequate amount of sleep.
  • Avoid drugs and alcohol.
  • If it’s too much for you to handle, seek professional help.
